Welcome to BANANA CITY

Drawn insights by a second-generation Taiwanese Canadian

I’m writing a graphic novel.

It’s a collection of lighthearted comics that pays homage to the second-generation Asian immigrant experience, while also shining a light on Taiwan.

“Banana City” was the title of a newsletter that was launched in the 1980s by a group of teens in our local chapter of the Taiwanese Canadian Association. Up to this point, I’d only known “banana” as a fruit. The term referred to us, the second-generation kids of our association — yellow on the outside, white on the inside — and can be used as an ethnic slur that refers to Asians who have either lost touch with or reject their background.

Here, you’ll find sample pages and sketches of my work in progress.
